Dr. Daniel Levitin

Daniel J. Levitin is James McGill Professor of Psychology
and Neuroscience at McGill University, where is holds Associate Appointments in
the Department of Neurology & Neurosurgery, the Faculty of Education,
School of Computer Science, and in the Schulich School of Music. He has been a visiting professor at UC
Berkeley, Stanford, and Dartmouth College where he has taught courses in the
Departments of Psychology, Computer Science, Human Biology, Music, Anthropology,
and the School of Education.
Dr. Levitin earned his B.A. in psychology and cognitive
science from Stanford, his Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from the University of
Oregon, and completed post-doctoral training at Stanford University and UC
Berkeley. Prior to entering
academia, Levitin was a record producer and engineer working with artists such
as Blue Öyster Cult, Chris Isaak, and Stevie Wonder. As a musician, he has performed with a variety musicians
including Mel Tormé, Sting, David Byrne,
Rosanne Cash, and Blue Öyster Cult.
He is the author of two best-selling books about music
cognition: "This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human
Obsession," which spent more than a year on the New York Times Bestseller
list and "The World in Six Songs: How the Musical Brain Created Human Nature"
which debuted on that list and reached #1 on the Canadian non-fiction
lists. His work has been
translated into 16 languages and he is one of the best-selling scientist
writers of the last ten years.
